I am in the middle of a series about my grandmother Eveline’s senior year of high school (1917-1918), but today is a bit of a break. I’m not aware that my grandmother ever played tennis or if there were even any tennis courts in her home town of Mystic, Iowa. The nearby county seat, Centerville, had tennis courts at the country club and the YMCA, so there were people playing tennis – but probably not Eveline.
Shoe stores in Centerville advertised tennis shoes for 69 cents. And there were stories of how “boys” at the local National Guard camp were in need of shoes, as many only had tennis shoes that were falling apart.
I did find this amusing photo in her local newspaper.
I wonder if anyone in Mystic took up ice tennis?
This post was originally about food, hence the title of this post that WordPress will NOT let me edit! What??? Anyway, I have too many tidbits about food saved from the newspaper and the internet and have run out of time for this week, so I’ll serve that up later.

Nice post and great save on the title 🙂 I see the ice tennis was done at a New York City hotel. Makes me want to research more to see if it actually caught on. Meanwhile, you win the prize for most unique tennis entry for this week’s Sepia Saturday.
I was too late to do any research as to whether it caught on. Let us know if you find out anything!
That is hilarious…the ice tennis, I mean. Of course no one related to you or me would play it (though my Aunt Margaret…) Happy to see another Sepian here.
It’s a pretty funny photo to go along with the game.
Never heard of ice tennis before! Sounds as logical as biathlon though (the combination of cross-country skiing and rifle sharpshooting)…
I hadn’t thought of that comparison, but yes. lol
I’d never heard of ice tennis before, either. I used to ice skate and fairly well, but I don’t think I could have handled ice tennis. I fear I’d be hitting the ice more than the ball – and not with my tennis racket! 😉 Good ‘outside the box’ save on the prompt!!!
How would you get across the court in time to hit the ball back? It’s hard to imagine, but must have been fun to watch.
